This covers the container that holds your actual page content — left sidebar, content and right sidebar — and how to control its proportions on desktop and its stacking order on a phone.
What the Main container is
Solo wraps Left Sidebar, Content and Right Sidebar in one grouped container with its own settings, and gives each of the three regions inside it a further set. The container settings decide the grid; the individual region settings decide what happens inside each cell.
Layout Settings
- The two columns' settings for main region — seven splits: 50/50, 67/33, 75/25, 80/20, 33/67, 25/75 and 20/80. The default follows your block layout: with only a right sidebar placed you get 67/33, with only a left sidebar 33/67.
- The three columns' settings for main region — 33.3/33.3/33.3, 25/50/25 or 20/60/20, with 25/50/25 as the default for Main.
- Enable per-content-type layouts for Main region — reveals a Layout for <type> group for every content type, each with its own two- and three-column override. This article covers the per-type layout idea in detail.
- Select the layout order for mobile view — five orders, from the default left-main-right through to content first with the sidebars after it in either order.
That mobile setting is the one most sites need and most themes do not offer: on a narrow screen your article should come before the sidebar widgets, not after them.
Styling, accessibility and colour
The Styling & Design tab adds rounded corners at 4, 8, 16 or 24 pixels, a border toggle for the inside regions, and a free-text CSS classes field. Accessibility holds one checkbox, Enable skip to main content link, which is worth having on every site. Colour settings give the container fifteen fields and each of the three regions fifteen more, alongside a left / centre / right block alignment select for large screens.
Main is deliberately leaner than the Top, Bottom and Footer containers — it has no border animation and no show-on-home-page-only visibility rule, because it is the region that always renders. Solo requires Drupal ^10.1 || ^11 || ^12; see the theme page.
