This is the tour of Solo's main navigation block: how deep it goes, how it opens, and every switch that changes its behaviour.
How deep the menu goes
The settings form states it plainly on its first tab: the primary menu block supports up to four levels of nested menu items, and the levels behave consistently, with both hover and click interactions available on large screens. Build the hierarchy in Drupal's own menu administration; the theme renders whatever depth it finds.
Layout, behaviour and styling
- Main menu block alignment (large screens only) — left by default, or centred, justified to fill its container, or right.
- Display a clickable logo next to the Main Menu — add the class
show-sitenamein the CSS Classes Only field to show the site name alongside it. - Show the main menu dropdowns when hovering instead of clicking, on large screens.
- Open the dropdown on the left instead of the default right — and Solo mirrors this automatically for right-to-left languages.
- Add border for each menu item, and hide dropdown arrows on hover menus when a long menu bar is getting cluttered.
If you have ever fought with a dropdown that will not stay open, the display:none versus visibility:hidden write-up explains the mechanics behind these choices.
Turning it into a mega menu
One checkbox converts the dropdowns into a mega menu. It needs a three-level menu to work with: the second level defines the columns, the third level fills them, and a further option displays those second level items as column headers. Fifteen layouts are offered, from a single full-width column through two, three and four column arrangements with varied proportions.
Accessibility and debugging
There is a skip to main navigation link, and keyboard navigation can be switched on per menu under Global Site Settings, where you also set the menu animation speed to fast, normal or slow. For developers there is a Solo Menu Debug Mode with its own verbosity level — useful while building, and meant to be turned off afterwards.
All of it runs on Drupal ^10.1 || ^11 || ^12. See the Solo theme page.
